The parent patent describes a process for reactivating impurity-laden active carbon in a fluidised bed reactor using combustion gases contg. CO2 and/or water vapour at 600-1200 degrees C. The temp. of the bed is maintained at a constant value 600-1100 degrees C and below the temp. of the reactivation gas. The control temp. is sensed at a point near the outlet from the bed and is controlled by varying the rate of feed of spent carbon. The temp. of the reactivating gas is meawhile maintained at a constant temp. by quenching with water or steam. In this addn. the process is carried out in reactors having two or more beds. The feed rate of carbon to the upper most bed is varied in order to maintain a constant temp. of 600-1100 degrees C near the outlet from the lowest bed. The temp. lies below the controlled temp. of the reactivating gas. The process enables even carbon particles contg. large amts. of impurities to be fully regenerated in a single reactor without the difficulties previously caused by the widely varying conditions through the reactor due to the changing characteristics of the carbon between the heavily satd. and fully regenerated states.
