Tetracycline is isolated from culture media by a process in which the insoluble tetracycline complex is suction filtered off using N2 to avoid decompsn. of the tetracycline by atmospheric O2. The complex is pref. then acidified to pH 4-5 with oxalic acid, the cations bound to the tetracycline (Fe, Mg, Ca, organic bases, etc.) are blocked with specific anions (oxalate, phosphate, ferrocyanide, etc.), the H2O is removed, pref. by spray-drying, and the ppte. is worked up in known manner. This avoids the intermediates step of isolating crude tetracycline.
