2-Dimethyl-amino-ethyl p-butylamino-benzoate derivs - prepd. by reacting cellulose glycollic acid with dimethylaminoethyl p-butylaminobenzoate

High-molecular derivs of formula (I): (where x is a degree of substn. of 0.6-1.5 and n is a degree of polymerisation of 30-120) are produced by reacting cellulose-glycollic acid with dimethylaminoethyl 4-butylamino-benzoate (II) in aq. medium at 40-50 degrees C and isolating the end-product from the resulting soln. (I) are local anaesthetics for use in peridural anaesthesia and in ophthalmological and otolaryngological practice. Their action is qualitatively the same as that of (II), but their effect is stronger and more prolonged and their toxicity is lower.
