Grained artificial leather - consisting of mixts. of PVC pastes and polyurethanes in polar solvents, on textile carriers

The non-porous outer layer, and the foamed inter layer if present, consists of mixts of (A) PVC paste (B) linear, non-crosslinked polyurethane or polyurethane-urea, and (C) strongly polar, high-boiling water-insol solvent. (C) is pref. a benzene or toluene sulphonic acid alkylamide with 3-6C alkyl gps. or an ester of p-oxybenzoic acid with a (6-9C) alcohol. The compsns. produce a permanently-grained effect, lower in cost han polyurethane coatings and more resistant to flame and hydrolysis. Amt of solvent used is much less than for polyurethane coatings, allowing conventional machinery to be used, with less fire risk.
