The first section of the choke is connected between the mains and the first lamp heater, and the second between the heater and starter which is then connected to the second heater and second mains lead. The second winding section is only effective in starting and the overall size of the choke can be reduced. The lamp heaters act as the electrodes between which the discharge passes one the lamp is started and in normal running the starter switch is open. when the lamp is first switched on, the starter switch is closed and the current passing through the heaters raises them to a temp. sufficient to initiate the gas discharge.
