Underwater pipe or tunnel laying - with sections assembled on bases hung from cables stretched between contractable piers

The pipe, tunnel or other elongated cylindrical body to be laid under water but above the bed, is assembled from sections above water level before lowering to the required depth. The piers carrying the cables from which the support surfaces are hung can afterwards be lowered as required; they are pref. of reinforced concrete, incorporating a lower cylinder section and an upper piston section with a hole passing through for insertion or withdrawal of a hydraulic substance, which may be a viscous plastic mass. Very wide water areas can be spanned.
