Luminous radioactive light source contain (a) carbon-14-contg. cpds. and (b) luminescent cpds. Suitable C14-contg. cpds. include inorganic salts, esp. carbonates, e.g. BaCO3; gases, e.g. CO, CO2, CH4, C2H6, C2H4 and HC=-CH; polyolefins, polydiolefins and polysiloxanes. Luminescent cpds. include crystalline inorganic cpds., e.g. ZnS-Ag, Zns-Cu. ZnS/CdS-Cu. CdS-Ag, ZnO4, Zn2SiO4-Mn, CdB4O7, CdWO4, MgWO4; and organic cps. pref. heterocyclic and aromatic cpds., e.g. anthracene, phenanthrene, terphenyl, naphthalene, diphenyl, stilbene, dibenzyl, carbazole and acridine. The light sources are made by bringing (a) and (b) into contact. Suitable methods include:-(1) pptg. inorganic C14-contg. salts from aq. soln. contg. a luminescent cpd; (2) enclosing C14-contg. gas in a glass article coated with a luminescent cpd; and (3) mixing C14-contg. olefins or diolefins with luminescent the hydrophilic surface. The base has the advantages but not the disadvantages of a paper base with no plastics coating Scratches and holes in the plastics (polyethylene) surface are covered by the emulsion and a mat, seminar or glossy surface can be obtd. Photographic emulsions can be applied directly, without additional treatment.
