If the overload protection does not operate, its failure to do so is indicated by a shear pin breaking. The lifting force of the crane is transmitted via a double-armed lever, one of whose arms is loaded in the one direction, while the other arm has a series of bores of the same diameter at different distances from the pivot point. These accommodate the shear pin, which bears against a component loaded in the other direction. The lever can be straight, having a half-bore on one side to accommodate the pivot pin, and protruding at one end from the housing constituting the latter component, the protruding end being attached to the component loaded in the first direction.
