Dusty effluent gases are cleaned in a wet electrofilter comprising a rod-like spraying electrode and a surrounding tube-like precipitation electrode in which the inner walls of the precipitation electrode are kept below the dew point of the gases by external cooling. The specification also claims an apparatus with specially cooled electrodes. The electro-filter is used for cleaning large quantities of gas such as are obtained from metallurgical oxygen converters. The precipitation electrodes are kept damp thus preventing caking of the dust on them and allowing them to be readily cleaned.
