The automated unit comprises electric release buttons corresponding to the articles stacked on shelves behind transparent walls, and a control device which can be set by actuating the release button. The control device comprises a numerator for setting the prices for the goods selected by the customer and an adding machine for adding up the prices. A conveyor takes the selected goods to the delivery device, which may be a basket, where they are moved by the customer. The control device is set so that first the prices of the goods selected are recoeded on the numerator, following which the adding machine is actuated and then the conveyor. This system rules out shop lifting by the customers and mistakes by the assistants, as well as congestion caused by wheeling trolleys etc. through shelf gangways.
