The horizontal holder containing the slices of bread move down under the weight of the bread at a predetermined speed past the horizontally mounted heating device after which the top of the slice of bread tilts outwardly so that it can be removed. After removing the bread the holder moves back up to its original position protruding from the top of the toaster housing. The holder moves up and down on vertical gear racks by means of gear wheels and the speed of rotation of the gearwheels can be adjusted to alter the toasting time.
