Bulk material handling crane - uses grab of conventional design but of titanium

The crane is particularly for handling iron ore, mill scale etc. in iron and steel works, and uses a grab of conventional design but made of titanium. A titanium alloy can be used, whose specific gravity is equal to or less than that of pure titanium, or an alloy of titanium and aluminium with a strength at least equal to that of pure titanium. The pure Ti version of the crane typically has a specific wt. of approx. 4.5 kg/dm3 and a strength of 50-60 kg/mm2. The alloy version typically contains either 4-6% Al to give a strength of 80 kg/mm2 or when an Al content of 7.5-8.5% is made, a strength of 91 kg/mm2 is obtd.
