Oscillations of different frequencies are used in the case of aircraft this allows a graph of flutter amplitude against aircraft velocity to be drawn, which gives an easy estimation of the critical velocity. A burst of oscillation is applied to the structure at a particular frequency and the amplitude of oscillation of the structure is observed. This grows over a period to some maximum value, and this time is observed. The drive is then removed and the oscillation of the structure decays over another period which is also observed. From the times involved a flutter characteristic is constructed.
