Lateral and upper sound sources are in addition to the usual front and rear phantom sources. One or several supporting loudspeakers are provided between the front and rear left or right loudspeaker. The supporting loudspeakers are supplied with a special signal derived from the quadrophonic signal. The supporting signal components are correspondingly suppressed in the four reproduction channels. The supporting signal contaions the coherent component in the front and rear channel of one side. Its level is a function of the degree of coherence and amplitude ratio of these two channels.
