The braking system restrains loads with high kinetic energy, such as a ship on launching and brings a landing aircraft to a halt on an aircraft carrier deck. The system uses an eddy current brake coupled to an electric machine which provides the excitation power for the brake. The coupling may be geared or it may be provided by a transformer. Preferably a basic load brake is additionally used and it may be formed by the electric machine. The latter is preferably of D.C. type operated either as a generator or motor according to load conditions. An electric control provides optimum brake characteristic for different masses, velocities and moments up to actual stopping of the load.
