A lifting passage is formed by a series of teeth, pointing in the same direction and composed of air-permeable plates, mounted opposite each other at the same interval as the teeth pitch. In this passage periodic flow conditions are generated, alternately producing fluidised bed and flow conditions. The teeth pitch, and the distance between tooth tips and flanks, and consequently the tooth inclination, can be arranged to allow wide variation to suit different materials. At particular heights the flow can be reinforced by admission of air through auxiliary inlets, and arrangements can be made to draw off surplus air via the tooth flanks. Apart from air, any other suitable medium can be used to transport the material.
