The bow of the ship has mechanical and/or hydraulic tensioners, and/or water-tight spaces, to couple with connection elements on the removable bulbous bow extension, and the corresponding connections on the hull, and/or recesses of the ship. During assembly, the extension is inserted into hooks and/or guide elements and then tensioned to the ship. The extension hooks onto a top projection, and is pulled against this and bearing support pads toward the rear of the unit adjacent the hull by the tensioning members mounted on either side.
