This damping system is used for damping vertical oscillations of railboud traction vehicles which are levitated on the track and driven by linear motors. The damping is achieved by using the synchronous linear motor, which is actually used for driving the traction vehicle, additionally as the adjusting element for the circuit for damping the vertical oscillations; the travelling field winding of the synchronous linear motor is fed with an alternating voltage whose amplitude and phase can be varied. This alternating voltage is adjusted by means of a static control converter on the initiation by a control signal which is provided by a damping regulator. This regulator has a measuring element which senses vertical oscillations of the vehicle, so that the entire system is self-regulating.
