The strip of packing material is fed off a storage roll with a brake between a pair of pull-off rollers, so as to keep it tight. Immediately adjacent to the rollers on the inlet side is a suction head extending over the full width of the strip, and which can have a suction slot extending for the same width. The upper roller can be divided into a set of individual roller sections spaced apart. The invention avoids the formation of lengthwise folds in the stip. The upper roller can be divided into smaller rolls distanced from each other, which is recommended when sticky bands are on the packing path.
