High-tension transmission line insulators - of conventional type interspersea with some doped with zinc oxide as flashover gaps

A high-tension transmission line is equipped with ceramic insulators which suspend the conductors and insulate them against earth. A part of the insulators are of the conventional type and another part with the same dimensions and mechanical strength is designed as flash-over gaps. The latter insulators are fitted with a core or with an outer sheath of doped zinc oxide. This saves the cost of the purchase and accomodation of special flash-over gaps.
