Venting seal for rack and pinion steering - with ring groove between vented space and inside of rack

The rack is mounted inside a rigid tube, closed at each end, and without rubber gaiters for a simpler, more robust design. The ends of the rack are fitted with special caps which enclose a ring shaped duct. This has venting holes to the inside of the hollow rack on the top of the rack profile, and venting holes to the outside of the rack at the bottom. The venting system is so designed that it prevents the passage of dirt etc. and enables the pressure differences across the rack to be equalised for a simplified steering action.
