High-grade combustible gas is produced in a compressor by introducing a hot feed gas (e.g. lean gas, water gas, gas from low-temp. coal carbonisation, town gas or a waste gas with a high CO2 content) and superheated steam into the compressor by suction or injection, injecting a carbon cpd. as a liq. spray or gas, compressing the mixt. at high temp., and thus converting the mixt. into a combustible gas (contg. CH4 and higher hydrocarbons). The compressor should have controlled inlet and outlet valves and as little dead space as possible. It is suitably an engine cylinder operated by means of a diesel engine; in this case, the exhaust gases from the diesel engine can be injected together with superheated steam (from an external source) and lignite-tar oil into the compressor. The system is space-saving and accurately controllable, giving a product gas of constant quality.
