The quenching chamber is filled with pressurised sulphur hexafluoride, and the light arc during switching off is drawn between the stationary and moving contacts. One of the chamber compartments houses the quenching contacts and is connected to the other adjacent compartments by a nozzle shaped aperture, a moving contact extending in its ON condition through this aperture, while during switching off the moving contact(s) is retractable through this aperture drawing the light arc behind. The increased pressure and temperature in the first compartment provides the quenching gas stream from the first compartment into the other on ones, as in 2,339,652. A piston cylinder unit, actuatable by the switch drive, assists during the switching off the gas flow from the first compartment into the other ones.
