The counting frequency is applied to the counter clock pulse inputs. Non-inverting outputs of the first (n-1) D-flip-flops are connected to the D-input of the next flip-flop, and at least two outputs can be connected through a coupling element to the D-input of the first D-flip-flop. In order to generate the inverse number series, outputs of the last (n-1) flip-flops are connected to the preceding flip-flop D-input. Two flip-flops outputs can be connected through a coupling element to the n-th flip-flop D-input. The coupling elements are coincidence gates, or they are anticoincidence gates, and may be set for forwards or backwards pulse sequencing.
