The damping cage, for a synchronous machine, consists of bars located on one side or both sides of the excitation windings. These bars are seating in grooves in the side walls of the slots that hold the excitation winding, and lie beneath the slots' closure pieces. The depth of the damping bars below the mouth of the slot depends on the shape of the closure pieces. Neighbouring damping bars in neighbouring slots are united to form single U-shaped bodies whose cross-pieces are electrically connected to the end plate and whose armed-ends are electrically connected to the other end plate.
