Process for the extraction of tannins from fruits of cupressus sempervirens and tannin preparations, various containing cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries
Tannin extracts are produced by subjecting Cupressus sempervirens fruits harvested 4-8 months after flowering of fruits remaining on the tree and harvested 16-20 months after flowering to extraction with an aq. solvent, treating the total extract or the evaporation residue of the extract with ca. 90 vol. % alcohol in order to separate therapeutically inactive weakly condensed tannins from the desired strongly condensed tannins, and collecting or recovering the resulting insoluble therapeutically active strongly condensed tannin fraction. All of the therapeutic activity of Cupressus sempervirens tannins (used in the treatment of venous disorders) is in the strongly condensed tannin fraction. The new process provides a simple means of separating the active strongly condensed tannins form the inactive weakly condensed fraction.
