Water absorbent thickening agents for the prodn. of printing pastes are dissolved by subjecting the mixt. of powder and water in predetermined proportions to a milling process setting up shear, compression and decompression forces; the viscous mass obtd. being then allowed to stand, outside the grinding process for a period, to be subsequently reintroduced into the milling circuit, before being pumped on for use. Any required viscosity between 15,000 and 30,000 cp. can be obtd. accurately, easily and quickly.
