Preparation of water soluble polymer based on (meth)acrylic derivatives useful as thickening agents for aqueous systems and printing pastes, gives excellent results in textile printing

Preparation of water soluble alkali metal and/or alkali earth metal carboxylate group containing homo- and/or copolymer based on acryl- or methacryl derivatives, in which: (a) acrylonitrile and/or methacrylonitrile is polymerized with persulfate/SO2 as redox initiator in aqueous medium; and (b) the aqueous medium of homo- and/or copolymer obtained is hydrolysed. Preparation of water soluble alkali metal and/or alkali earth metal carboxylate group containing homo- and/or copolymer based on acryl- or methacryl derivatives, in which: (a) acrylonitrile and/or methacrylonitrile is polymerized with persulfate/SO2 as redox initiator in aqueous medium; and (b) the aqueous medium of homo- and/or copolymer obtained is hydrolysed, and the aqueous solution of homo- and/or copolymer obtained after step (b) contains (mole %): alkali and/or alkali earth carboxylate groups (20-70), carboxylic acid amide groups (20-70), and residual nitrile groups (0-20). Independent claims are included for: (1) Preparation of water soluble carboxylic acid group containing homo- and/or copolymer based on acryl- and/or methacryl derivatives as in steps (a) and (b) above, and (c) the copolymer obtained as above is reacted with acid, so that the aqueous solution of homo- and/or copolymers contains (mole%): carboxylic acid groups (20-70), carboxylic acid amide groups (20-70), and residual nitrile groups (0-20), and the carboxylic acid groups contain only one alkali and/or alkali earth group of content less than 5 mole % relative to the total number of carboxylic acid groups; (2) a printing paste containing (a) either (a1) the aqueous solution of alkali and/or alkali earth metal carboxylate containing homo- and/or copolymers as above or (a2) the corresponding water soluble carboxylic acid group containing homo- and/or copolymers, (b) one or more binders, (c) one or more colorants or pigments, and (d) ammonia; (3) a process for preparation of an ammonium carboxylate group containing homo- and/or copolymers in which the homo- and/or copolymers is treated with ammonia, so that the resultant homo- and/or copolymers contains (mole%): ammonium carboxylate groups (20-70), carboxylic acid amide groups (20-70), and residual nitrile groups (0-20); (4) a printing paste containing (a3) water soluble homo- or copolymers, based on acryl and/ or methacryl derivates and containing ammonium carboxylate groups, and (b) one or more binders, and (c) one or more inks or pigments; (5) a process for printing textiles in which the textiles, preferably cotton, or polyester/cotton mixed textiles are treated with a printing paste; and (6) textiles treated with the above printing paste.
