Harness for mountaineers and steeplejacks etc., comprises a belt with buckle and a brake device consisting of a housing containing a drum about which a safety line is wound and which rotates against a braking force. The braking device is mounted in a strap assembly consisting of chest straps and leg straps, of which the ends are secured at fastening points arranged in the form of a triangle standing on its apex. Braking occurs without exceeding the limits of inertia of the human body. The housing of the device is made out of two mirror image sheet workpieces forming shells, which are joined to each other via peripheral flanges.
