Glass is coated with an antifouling agent for use in sea water by coating the surface exposed to the sea water with metal or reticular structure; the first layer e.g. of Ti, CrNi or another metal, acting as support and coupling layer on the surface, which is first roughened, e.g. by sand blasting, etching etc. The first metal layer is applied by spin coating or deposited from the vapour phase. This is followed by a second contact layer of Cu(alloy), opt. applied by electroplating, and then layers of Cu(alloy) applied by electroplating; the latter layers pref. being =0.2mm. thick. The coated glass pref. is tempered at 200-300 degrees C. The edges of the structures should have a bond which is resistant to sea water. The toxic and distance effect can be controlled by varying the mesh size. The transparency of the glass is not affected and the coatings are relatively insensitive to mechanical damage.
