The medium- to high-voltage gas-blast switch has two arcing horns at the sides of the moving contact piece and fixed in relation to one another (and perpendicular to the motion of the contact piece). At switch off, arcing occurs between these horns. Parallel, spaced insulating plates are located between the arcing horns and at right angles to the line joining them. The piston produces an increase in pressure in the space on the outside of the head, and a reduction in pressure in the space beneath its head -- i.e. an eventual decrease in pressure in the arcing region between horns.
