Two contact pieces (2, 3) sepd. by a fixed distance are surrounded by a concentric mechanical compressor comprising a stationary piston (5) in a cyliner (4) which moves with a third contact (7) to compress the arc-quenching gas in a space (6) around a turbulence grid (9) opening (10) into the arc chamber (11). A hollow cylindrical screen (12) displaced axially against a recoil spring (13) around the moving contact (7) controls the flow of gas through the grid (9) for the duration of the blast. ADVANTAGE - Arc-quenching capacity can be maintained with lower consumption of gas flowing at max. speed.
