The indicator has a magnetic coil (10) of variable inductance which is mounted on a core (11) of ferromagnetic material in the shape of a U. A short-circuiting ring (12) is placed so as to move as a function of the displacement to be measured along the two arms of the U-shaped core. An oscillator (30, 32, 34) is provided for producing a signal dependent on the inductance of the coil and thus dependent on the displacement. The short-circuiting ring (12) may be constructed of several sheet metal plates stacked upon each other.
