The farrington 7B format circuitry to minimise the memory requirements. Within this system characters are formed by a combination of horizontal and vertical slots in a punched card. A vertical banks of thirteen photodiodes are moved horizontally across a line of text and the read out is digitised into a number of sampling sections across the horizontal width of a character. The vertical height of the character is also digitised into 5 sections. The card is fed by a feed mechanism under the photodiode bank and the outputs are amplified and pulses a formed. The characters are identified and are stored in a memory. The memory state and input are compared before displaying and any disparity is indicated. The central control unit synchronises the feed mechanism and pulse timing signals in the character recognition circuits.
