Carboxylic acids of formula (I) (where R1 is opt. substd. aryl, R2 is H or 1-4C alkyl, and n is 1 or 2) (e.g. 4-benzoyl-indane-2-carboxylic acid) and their carboxy-functional derivs. are new cpds. Those cpds in which R2 is H may be prepd by a claimed process in which (a) a cpd of formula (II) its carboxy-functional deriv is reacted with R1-COOH or its functional deriv. (b) a cpd of formula (VIII) is subjected to solvolysis, (c) a cpd of formula (I') or its carboxy-functional deriv is reacted with R1-H, (d) a cpd of formula (III-c) or its carboxy-functional deriv is oxidised or (e) a cpd of formula (X) (where R3 and R4 are subst. mercapto gps which may be linked to form a ring) is subjected to solvolysis. The starting matls. (VIII) and (III-c) and their carboxy-functional derivs. and cpds corresp. to (I') in which the COOH gp attached to the satd. ring is replaced by a CONH2 gp. are new cpds which are claimed per se. (I) are antipyretics, analgesics and antiinflammatories.
