The octapeptide pyroGlu-Gly-Lys-Arg-Pro-Trp-Ile-Leu-OH(I), which occurs naturally in the African frog Xenopus laevis pipidae, is produced by removing the protecting gps. which can be removed by chemical treatment without adversely affecting the octapeptide chain R1-R4 not all being H) by chemical treatment. (I) has various pharmacological activities, partic. a hypotensive action and a contractile effect on the muscle of the gastric fundus.
