Tongs for continuous cast slabs - with slotted sliders for tongs actuation articulated to move transversely to lifting motion

Tongs for the handling of lengths of continuously cast metal slabs consist of two shanks, each supported in a slotted slider which can be lifted for the closing operation by a spindle or a rope. The slotted sliders are supported by a pantograph linkage and by a guide link so that they are moved transversely to the direction of action of the lifting drive. Difficulties of hydraulic actuators at high ambient temps. are eliminated. Lost motion is kept to a minimum and the stacking height can be fully utilised.
