In difluoresceinyl-mercury compounds of Formalµ (Ia) or (Ib) (where R=H or halogen and RSP1/SP-RSP5/SP = H, halogen, alkyl or HgX, where X is an anion) at least one of R and RSP1/SP-RSP5/SP is radioactive iodine. The mercury atom need not be radioactive. The compounds may be prepared by reacting a suspension of the corresponding fluorescein derivative with a solution of an ionic bivalent mercury compound, e.g. mercuric acetate, whereby the mercury atom is substituted in two stages. The desired compound is separated by chromatography. The following compounds are disclosed, having labelling SP125/SPI, SP131/SPI, SP125/SPISP203/SPHg, SP125/SPISP197/SPHg, SP131/SPISP203/SPHg or SP131/SPISP197/SPHg: bis-4SP1/SP-(2SP1/SP,7SP1/SP-diiodofluoresceinyl) mercury, bis - 21 - (4SP1/SP,5SP1/SP- diiodofluoresceinyl) mercury and bis-(tetraiodofluoresceinyl) mercury. The chromatographic fractions can contain the pure compound or a mixture thereof with the hydroxymercuryfluorescein compound.
