1372853 Organo-transition metal complexes IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 15 March 1972 [28 June 1971] 30266/71 Heading C2J Polynuclear organometal complexes, particularly #-allyl complexes, of Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Tc or Re which contain a metal-metal bond are prepared by reacting a solution or suspension of an appropriate transition metal compound including at least two metal atoms joined by a metal-metal bond and also including anionic ligands (especially halide, carboxylate or cyclopentadienyl) with a solution of an organometallic compound (especially a Grignard or Li compound) including hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl groups. The latter groups may be #-allylic or of formula -CH 2 Y where Y is an atom or group which can interact with the vacant d-orbitals of the metal or is -ZRSP1/SP 3 where Z is C, Si, Ge, Sn or Pb and RSP1/SP is H or hydrocarbyl. In the examples: (1) hexakis (#- allyl) dirhenium (also claimed "per se") is prepared from dichlorodirhenium tetraacetate and allyl MgCl; (2) tetrakis (#- allyl) dimolybdenum is prepared by reacting lithium allyl with (a) Mo 2 (acetate) 4 or (b) MoCl 3 trimer; or by reacting allyl Grignard with (a) Mo 2 (acetate) 4 or (b) Cl 4 ((n-Bu) 3 P) 4 MO 2 ; (3) tetrakis (#-crotyl) dimolybdenum is prepared from Mo 2 (acetate) 4 and crotyl MgBr.
