The flask contains a liq. culture medium and a solid medium in the form of a layer of solidified gelose in a closed space filled with a sterile mixture of air and CO2, and culture are grown simultaneously on the gelose and in the liq. medium. Basically, the gelose is spread on to a vertical wall of the flask which forms acute angles with two adjacent, vertical walls. Pref., the horizontal cross-section of the flask is an equilateral triangle. The gelose does not detach itself from the wall as it does in square and rectangular flasks, and separate culture colonies are more positively identifiable because the viewing angle is improved.
