In a (submerged) arc welding or coating process a regular supply of consumable electrode strips from a coil towards the surface to be welded or coated passes through the jaws of an electrode gripper which supplies electric current to the strip. The strip is deformed to create a transverse profile defining zones or bands of contact between the strip and the gripper jaws. The regularity of the weld or coating bead is improved by avoiding creation of lines of least resistance in the strip caused by irregular contact between a flat smooth strip and the jaws of the gripper.
