Applying resin coating to fibres or particles - by turbulent impact with a high velocity spray

fibres or other relatively small particles are dispersed at a controlled rate to fall into a small chamber contg. a turbine type atomiser generating a horizontal radial high velocity spray of a resin coating soln. The spray droplets impact the target fibres etc. under turbulent conditions in a carrier fluid (air) drawn down through the chamber by an aspirator feeding from the base of the chamber. The fibre feed system comprises a two stage hopper discharging via an Archimedean screw. A conical baffle in the chamber deflects the falling particles beyond the rim of the spray turbine. Esp. used for coating fibres to be consolidated into medium density particle board or panels. Impregnation of individual fibres which are subsequently bulked together produces more uniform coatings and requires low overall resin loadings for a required panel strength than impregnation of pre-compressed or woven fibres. Removal of volatile solvent is also relatively prompt and complete.
