The hay making machine comprises a rotary pick-up rake wheel beneath a vertical axial spindle (1) within a cylindrical bush (16"), integral with a rotary pick-up member (16') of mainly conical shape. For working operations this is compressed by a coil-spring (14) within the bush. At ground level are rake-teeth (9) of elastic material lowered by tumbler joints (10). In the rest position the teeth (9) are raised above ground level, and the compression spring expands to expel the hay from the pick-up member.
