Alkenyl derivs. of alpha-aminoacids of formula (I): (in which X is CN, COOH, CONH2, COOCH3 or COOC2H5; R1 and R2 are independently H or alkyl; R3 is H or COR7, where R7 is alkyl or haloalkyl; R4 is H, alkyl or aryl; R5 is H, COOC2H5, alkylcarbonyl, arylcarbonyl or CN, and R6 is alkylcarbonyl, arylcarbonyl, COOC2H5, ethoxycarbonyl-alkyl or CN). (I) have herbicidal activity, and control weeds such as Sinapis, Lepedium, Galium, Chenopodium, Senecio, Phleum, Poa, Setaria and Echinochloa. They are useful as selective herbicides for cereals, maize and cotton crops, and also, at higher appln. rates, as total herbicides. (I) may be applied pre- or post-emergence at 0.1-25 (pref. 0.5-10) kg/ha.
