Hard or flexible keratin, e.g. horn, hair, bristles or feathers are rendered useful by reduction to proteins, polypeptides, peptides and amino acids assimilable by living organisms. The prods. are used as a food supplement supplying amino nitrogen, or when mixed with toxic cpds. as an agent for the destruction of harmful animals, e.g. rats.
