The teaching aid comprises a flat base (1), which is pref. circular, with a post (2) projecting from the cntre of the base (1) and surrounded by a cylindrical hood (3), coaxial with the post (2). The top edge (4) of the hood (3) is at an angle tot he horizontal and a slot (5) extends down towards the base from the bottom of the inclined edge (4). A reel of surgical thread (8) may be held by a peg adjacent the periphery of the base (1), which may also act as a support surface for the surgical instruments (7) used by the student to tie a length of thread around the upstanding post (2) enclosed by the hood (3).
