The infra-red spectrum pick-up system relates to a beam width of 100-150 MU, and having a rectangular cross-section. Equipment comprises an adjustable source unit (1) with an input (7) and control access (4). The flat beam of infra-red radiation of thickness passes to an absorption medium (3) with water level adjustment through inlet and outlet pipes (8, 9). The beam passes through a slot type opening (5) in a cylindrical arrangement (6). Measurements may be used for determinations of molar concentration, using the Lambert-Beer method, where the ratio I/I(O) of the transmitted to the incident irradiation is equated to the exponential of the negative of a factor K(C1+C2)d where K is the absorption constant, and C1 and C2 are the molar concentrations of water and of the substance under investigation.
