The compsn. comprises (A) a mixt. composed of either (a) a borate of an element of gp. II to VIII or (b) boric acid cpd. in the form of boric acid and boric oxide and at least a phosphoric acid cpd. in the form of phosphoric acid, phosphorus pentoxide and metal phosphates, and at least a multivalent metal cpd. in the form of metal oxides, hydroxides, carbonates, phosphates, silicates, sulphates and nitrates, this mixt. having been calcined at 300-1500 degrees C, and (B) a water soluble silicate. For the prodn. of hard and bright thin films on wood, ceramic and metal substrates, resistant to attack by water, chemical, heat, and resistant to atmospheric corrosion.
