Substd. benzoylethylene diamine derivs. of formula (I): (where X = H or CH3CO; R = O, CH3I or C2H5I; n = 0 or 1), are useful as anti-emetics, choleretics, and laxatives. They have a better therapeutic index than metoclopramide. Cpds. (I) may be prepd. as follows: 4-amino-2-methoxybenzoic acid, pref. protected on the amino and carboxyl gps., is chlorinated with, for example, sodium chlorate in acid soln., and the prodt. is condensed with diethylaminoethylamine. This condensation prodt. may then be oxidised or treated with methyl or ethyl iodide to give (I; n = 1).
