The novel prepn. of salts of 7:7:8:8-tetracyanoquinodimethane comprises reacting a salt of formula (I) or (II): (where X is a cation; Y is a transition metal atom; Z is S, Se or Te) with 7:7:8:8-tetracyanoquinodimethane, in a polar organic solvent and isolating the reaction product from the soln. (I) are electrically conducting cpds. and their prepn. is assured by using the appropriate starting materials (I) and (II).
